The BBC is reporting that the Bureau d’Enquêtes et d’Analyses (BEA) has found one of two so-called black box devices from the wreckage of Air France Flight 447. The news agency says while the cover of the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) was found earlier, its data storage system was not located.
However, it appears that the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) was found and, according to the BBC, the BEA says it is “in good physical condition”. The CVR may provide details of the warning sounds (i.e., horns, buzzers, chimes) and cockpit conversation held in the moments leading up to and through the accident.
The FDR, if found and if its data is accessible, would tell the investigators more about the conditions the aircraft experienced, its speed, and the inputs made or attempted by the pilots. So far the data module remains missing.
Air France Flight 447 was an Airbus A330.
